History of Baltimore
Baltimore history dates back to the seventeenth century when it was first settled by David Jones, an Englishmen. In 1729, the city was officially established, originally as a port and later was named after George Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, founder of Maryland. Baltimore grew rapidly since then. Baltimore was once a busy port that came into picture during the 1812 War.
The city played a key role in the American Revolution in 1814 by helping the opposition against the British. During that period, Francis Scott penned a poem “The Star Spangled Banner”, which formed the text of the national anthem. During the 19th century, the city was a major trade and shipping center. The built of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad amid the early 19th century was a great success. In the early 20th century, the city witnessed a decline. Baltimore turned into a major industrial center in 1880. During the mid-1960s, the black population grew in the city close to 50 percent. In late 1970s, the city had undergone a redevelopment. The Inner harbor and old town center were renovated completely. Now, the city has transformed into a modern and lively city.
